CAMILLE (1936) Portrait of Greta Garbo by Clarence Sinclair Bull

Sold

Vintage original 8 x 10″ (20 x 25 cm.) black-and-white single weight glossy silver gelatin print still photo, USA. Greta Garbo, Robert Taylor, Lionel Barrymore, Elizabeth Allan, Jessie Ralph, Henry Daniell, Lenore Ulric, Laura Hope Crews, Rex O’Malley, dir: George Cukor; MGM. Fine.

The finest and certainly most romantic version ever of the classic Alexandre Dumas, fils novel.

Legendary Zoe Akins, Frances Marion and James Hilton wrote the screenplay and George Cukor brought Greta Garbo’s most fantastic portrayal to the screen. Only MGM, with its sumptuous period sets (they bought real antiques and dressings in Europe), costumes by Adrian, the cinematography of William Daniels and Karl Freund and the romantic creative atmosphere of 1936 Hollywood could have created this great film. Garbo had her prettiest co-star, too: young Robert Taylor. Garbo was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress.

This original portrait of Garbo in her Adrian-designed costume is one of the finest of any sitting the star actress did for her role of Marguerite Gautier, and it bears the ink stamp of “photo by Clarence Sinclair Bull” on the verso.
