H.G. WELLS SNAPS A PORTRAIT OF ETHEL MERMAN (1935)

Sold

Vintage original 7 x 9” (18 x 23 cm.) black and white single weight glossy silver gelatin print still photo. What appears to be a truly bizarre meeting does have an explanation. Fortunately the attached paper blurb on the verso tells us. Writer H. G. Wells and stage and film star Ethel Merman were attending the New York Press Photographers ball. Wells wanted to show the photographers that he too knew how to take a good photo, and Ethel was his willing subject. This newspaper photo has had much use and the ink stamps on the verso prove it. The original date stamp used for the Inquirer is for Jan. 1, 1936. The blurb is dated Dec. 31, New York, so this must have been a New Year’s party for 1936. The Philadelphia Inquirer used it April 3, 1937. They used it again in Feb. of 1944. There is also a Dec. 31, 1935 Associated Press ink stamp. Very unusual. Minor creasing overall, a stronger crease near the bottom right corner. VERY GOOD-FINE. 300.00
