I. MAGNIN BUILDING, LOS ANGELES (1939) Photo

Sold

Vintage original 10 x 8″ (25 x 20 cm.) black-and-white single weight glossy silver gelatin print still photo, USA. A 1941 Los Angeles guidebook described architect Myron Hunt’s I. Magnin building at Wilshire Blvd. and Vermont Ave., finished two years earlier, as an “elaborate new” department store with shop floors “furnished in shades of apricot” and featuring “indirect lighting effects like those achieved by Parisian artists and technicians.” Today, the building hosts a nightclub called the “S Bar,” in the up-and-coming Koreatown area of Los Angeles.
This photo, in looking at the cars, appears to be approximately from the store’s first year of opening. The logo of photographer Maynard Parker is at the bottom right corner of the still border and also there is his ink stamp on the verso. Light handling. ABOUT FINE.
