Vintage original 8 x 10 (20 x 25 cm.) black and white single weight glossy silver gelatin print still photo, USA. Emil Jannings, Marlene Dietrich, Kur Gerron, dir: Josef von Sternberg; Paramount/UFA. Filmed in 1929 in both a German and English speaking version, this classic is known to be Germany’s first full length talking film. It made Marlene Dietrich an immortal star. Many star actresses were considered for the German UFA/Paramount film but director von Sternberg selected the little known Dietrich because of her blasé attitude. An affair which would last for years began and star Emil Jannings grew temperamental over the attention to Dietrich while von Sternberg’s wife filed for divorce. A major Hollywood alliance started between star and director once filming ended. In still 1293-88, promoting the English speaking version of the title, the professor first encounters the notorious night club singer Lola Lola. Minor edge and corner creasing, tiny tear to bottom margin edge below the “D” of “Dietrich”. ABOUT FINE.
