ERSKINE HAWKINS (ca. 1945) Record store poster

Sold

RCA Victor, [ca 1945]. Vintage original 24 x 18” (61 x 46 cm.) record store standee poster, USA.

Hawkins was a trumpeet player of the first order, often referred to as “the Twentieth Century Gabriel.” From 1936 onwards, he led a variety of bands. By the late 1930’s, Erskine Hawkins and His Orchestra was one of the premier house bands at the mythical Savoy Ballroom in Harlem, and he signed with RCA Victor Records, but his recordings were on their “race” label, Bluebird Records.

By the mid-1940’s, Hawkins’ popularity had grown, and RCA transferred him to their main label. Minor bumping and light handling at edges, with one small stain at middle top, overall near fine. Original cardboard extension for use as a standee is present.
