FULL STORY OF THE BIG FIGHT ILLUSTRATED FROM CABLES (1910) UK pamphlet

(African American history) (Jack Johnson) London: Mirror of Life Co., [1910].  Pamphlet magazine, printed on newsprint, illustrated, 16 pp., 10 5/8 x 8 ¼” (27 x 21 cm.), 16 pp.  Light creases, with minor chips and tears to edges, paper has toning and some brittleness but, considering the paper stock originally used, this is very definitely a superior copy, and very good condition.

This British pamphlet of what was dubbed the “fight of the century” documents the championship bout between African American boxer Jack Johnson and former heavyweight champ Jim Jeffries.  Given the explicit racism of the day, it is no surprise that the proud and iconoclastic Johnson infuriated many white people — and so fight promoters endlessly searched for a “great white hope” to defeat him.

In this bout, Jeffries was soundly defeated by the younger and more agile Johnson in the fifteenth round. This pamphlet is illustrated mainly with drawings and a few photographs.  This is a scarce book of which I can find no record in the OCLC.
