DODSWORTH on BROADWAY (1934) Collection of 2 oversize set photos

Sold

Sinclair Lewis (source) [New York, 1934]. Set of two (2) vintage original black-and-white double weight glossy silver gelatin set photos for the Sidney Howard play based on Sinclair Lewis’ novel. Robert B. Sinclair directed, Max Gordon produced and the scenic design was by Jo Mielziner. One photo with diagonal crease at extreme top left, overall near fine.

The show ran from Feb. 24, 1934, through Jun. 30, 1934, with 147 performances. Cast included Walter Huston and Fay Bainter. Just two years later, Sam Goldwyn would produce a movie version which is considered one of the best films of the 1930s. Photos by E. White Studio were likely used for Stage magazine.

  • 11 x 14″ (28 x 35 cm.) A note on verso indicates that this is a set for Scene 2, very possibly for Act I, which would have taken place in Sam Dodsworth’s home in Zenith;
  • 10 x 13″ (25 x 32 cm.) Most likely a set for one of the later acts, presumably set in a European hotel room.
