MARY NOLAN | SHANGHAI LADY (1929) Photo posed provocatively by Roman Freulich

Sold

Los Angeles; Universal Studios, [1929]. Vintage original 9 1/2 x 7 1/2″ (23 x 19 cm.) double weight glossy silver gelatin photo, near fine.

Mary Nolan played her share of girls gone bad, this time starting in a Shanghai opium den. But as Cassie Cook she strived to start a new life. The Universal Studios costumer made the characterization clear to 1929 standards of what a prostitute should look like.

The verso features photographer Roman Freulich’s Universal Pictures Corp. ink stamp and the original attached paper blurb.
