CINÉMATOGRAPHE (ca. 1895) Flyer

Sold

Lyon: Auguste and Louis Lumière, [ca. 1895]. Vintage original 3 3/4 x 2 1/4″ (9.5 x 6 cm.) flyer, with an original frame of nitrate film embedded, just about fine, archivally framed.

At the dawn of cinema history, the Lumière brothers began to host screenings in Paris of their new invention, the cinématographe. This flyer, with a frame of film from one of their earliest moving pictures, was almost certainly mailed out to interest either prospective investors or the press in their work.

This flyer is extremely scarce. One example (sold by Heritage Auctions in 2022 for $5,790) was in an envelope to which the name of the film had been stamped. This example does not include that envelope. I cannot find any evidence of any other examples appearing for sale in older auction records, nor any examples listed in WorldCat.
