7. Lorraine Hansberry (source, screenwriter)
[Hollywood]: Columbia Pictures, 1961. Vintage original 40 x 30” (100 x 75 cm.) poster, unfolded, just about fine.
Lorraine Hansberry insisted that she write the film adaptation of her 1959 play, about a Black Chicago family seeking to improve their way of life from an insurance payout following the death of their father. Most of the members of the film’s cast were in the original Broad- way production, and the film contains many now-legend- ary names: Sidney Poitier, Claudia McNeil, Ruby Dee, Diana Sands and Louis Gossett Jr.
Columbia Pictures did not have great faith in this film, and almost all of their posters for it are exceedingly bland, with virtually no hint of Black life. This extremely scarce poster, with its depiction of a ghetto street, is the one exception, and it is the only one which this cataloguer has ever handled.
