PHILIP GLASS (1975-89) Photo archive

$750.00

Set of twelve vintage original black-and-white photos, of which 5 are borderless and approximately 9 1/2 x 7″ (23 x 29 cm) and the others 8 x 10″ (20 x 25 cm). Near fine except as noted, ca. 1975-1989.

The five borderless photos include one portrait of Glass and four with his frequent artistic collaborator, Robert Wilson. All have a stamp on verso of a Beverly Hills photographer, and I suggest these were made as publicity for the projected full performance of the opera The Civil Wars, which was intended to be performed at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles but which was unfortunately canceled due to budgetary shortfalls.

Of the other seven  photos, one is an early portrait of Glass by French cinematographer and film director Babette Mangolte (with MN printer notations in margin); two photos from 1981 include Glass at the keyboard and with the Philip Glass Ensemble; three double weight photos ca. 1986 show Glass at the keyboard and leading his ensemble at the time of the first live performance of Songs from Liquid Days and the New York premiere of A Descent into the Maelstrom (one photo has printing notations in verso); and a 1989 portrait of Glass for his performance of The Fall of the House of Usher at Lincoln Center.
