The Jeffersons was an enormously popular television sitcom series which aired from 1975 to 1985. The show focuses on George and Louise Jefferson, a prosperous black couple who have been able to move from Queens to Manhattan owing to the success of George’s dry-cleaning chain, Jefferson Cleaners. The show eventually evolved into more of a traditional sitcom, but episodes occasionally focused on serious issues such as alcoholism, racism, suicide, gun control, being transgender, the KKK, and adult illiteracy. Bogle, Blacks in American Films and Television, p. 284: “Marked a significant continuation of old-style ethnic theatre/humor and brought pleasure to many black audiences who felt communal links with the confidence of George and Florence.”
