Deep Throat is a groundbreaking film, an X-rated pornographic feature which had actual characters and a semblance of a plotline, and shot on what at the time was a considerably larger than normal budget — and the film had a huge impact. It kicked-off the period of so-called “pornography chic” in which middle class couples in droves chose to go see this film.

Deep Throat had its world premiere in New York City on June 12, 1972. The film was such a success that its release continued for a very long time. The original poster used was a rather bland photographic one; by 1973 this new poster, with artwork of star Linda Lovelace, was produced while the film was still in its original release.
