ANNA KARENINA (1935) Oversized photo no. 3
Vintage original 14 x 17″ (35 x 43 cm.) sepia-tinted oversize photo no. 3, USA, Greta Garbo, Fredric March, Freddie Bartholomew, Maureen O’Sullivan, May Robson, Basil Rathbone, Reginald Owen, dir: Clarence Brown: MGM. There has been light professional conservation to this rare photo, near fine.
Very unusual and beautiful oversize photo for this classic Garbo film based on Tolstoy’s novel. Garbo’s favorite writer Salka Viertel adapted the book for her, as did S. N. Behrman and Clemence Dane for what many feel is the definitive film version.
Anna must come to terms with the social repercussions when she allows herself to fall in love while married and with a child.
This photo is a montage featuring a portrait of Greta Garbo as Anna Karenina set against a backdrop of a philandering Fredric March playing Vronsky. Technical aspects of this film were far advanced and Garbo’s understated performance earned her the New York Film Critics Award for Best Actress. This was at one time one of a numbered set of eight oversized photos.
