PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS, THE (1934) Concept ad art by Buell

Vintage original 8 x 15″ (20 x 38 cm.) ink and gauche conceptual advertising painting on art board, USA. Francis Lederer, Joan Bennett, Charles Ruggles, Mary Boland, dir: Alexander Hall; Paramount. Set during the colonial war, a Hessian soldier in the British army falls for an American girl.
Advertising artist B. Buell has captured the features of stars Francis Lederer and Joan Bennett in his simple and charming art while suggesting the light weight romantic tone of the story. A rare film, only a nitrate print is known to survive. Rarely is art like this seen, which was most likely used in one of the studio’s extravagant yearbooks of the time. Minor dents at corners only, nice and clean. ABOUT FINE.
