Howard Hawks directed and Howard Hughes produced this classic early talking gangster film in which Paul Muni played the vicious Camonte, a character loosely modeled on Al Capone. Ben Hecht wrote the screenplay, a perfect fit for him since he had spent his early years as a journalist working in the Chicago of the 1920s.
