DRAGON SEED (Aug 13, 1943) Revised film script by Marguerite Roberts for Pearl S. Buck adaptation

Vintage original script by Marguerite Roberts dated 8-13-43, with revisions on colored paper dated up through 11-26-43, for Pearl S. Buck adaptation. Brad bound, printed wrappers, mimeograph, 190 pp. Minor water stains to covers, generally near fine in very good or better wrappers.

Numerous pages have the name of director James Conway written in pencil, making it almost certain that this was his copy of the script. However, it does not contain any MS annotations.

As the Second Sino-Japanese War erupts in 1937 with the Japanese invasion of northern China, the rural Tan family in southern China go about their daily chores without notice of the impending conflict. Jade (Katharine Hepburn), wife of Lao Er Tan (Turhan Bey), desires books, an unconventional request for a Chinese wife. But when war finally reaches the family, Jade is first to join the resistance, leading pacifist patriarch Ling Tan (Walter Huston) to concern over his family’s entry in the war.” (Wikipedia)

At this moment in her career, after a few years of comedies in which her feminist characters generally got their comeuppance in the final reel, Hepburn was now returning to the strong kinds of characters with which she had earlier been identified, in this film, with a woman screenwriter, adapted from a novel by Pearl S. Buck.
