Sold

Jules Feiffer (playwright) Vintage original theatre script, USA. New York: Alexander H. Cohen/Shubert Theatre, [nd. but ca. 1966]. [3],51,36 leaves, quarto, mimeographed typescript, printed on rectos only. Bolt bound in gilt-stamped flexible stiff wrappers. Wrappers a bit edge-worn and creased, NEAR FINE in VERY GOOD wrappers.

An early script for Jules Feiffer’s breakthrough black comedy, with an agency stamp for Robert Lantz Agency. This is one of at least two early drafts which exist of this play, both significantly different from each other (with this one 11 leaves longer than the other of which we are aware) and from the final, published version.

The play opened in New Haven in 1966, then moved to New York in 1967. It was not an immediate success. It took a while for this comedy to take hold (a young woman who brings her boyfriend home to meet her severely dysfunctional family, amidst random shootings, garbage strikes and electrical outages in their New York City neighborhood). The play was the basis of a 1971 feature film by Alan Arkin, and has been successfully revived.
