Anna May Wong‘s early career was based in Los Angeles. Photo Pathé had offices in both New York and Los Angeles, and this portrait seems early in her career, particularly clear in her youthful appearance. The portrait was definitely made prior to her departure to work in Europe in 1928. It is one of the most spectacular portraits of Anna May Wong that we have ever seen. Now recognized as the first American Chinese movie star, she has been honored in recent times including in the issuing of the American quarter coin with her likeness.
