DUCK SOUP | GROUCHO MARX IN PRODUCTION NUMBER (1933) Photo

Sold

[Los Angeles: Paramount Pictures, 1933]. Vintage original 8 x 10″ (20 x 25 cm.) black-and-white single weight glossy silver gelatin photo. Some border soiling and wear at all four of the blank white margins. Creases at bottom left and right corners, very good.

Groucho poses and clowns with an elegant array of costumed chorus ladies as Margaret Dumont and dignitaries of Freedonia are only slightly amused by the antics.

Though the box office was quite good in 1933, audiences were taken aback by such preposterous political disregard, buffoonery and cynicism during the height of the Depression. which involved economic and political crisis. Mussolini banned the film in Italy thinking it was a direct attack on him;  the Marx Brothers were ecstatic. The film is now part of the National Film Registry.
