HALLELUJAH (1928) Daniel Haynes, Nina Mae McKinney

[Los Angeles: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, 1928]. Vintage original 8 x 10″ (20 x 25 cm.) black-and-white glossy silver gelatin photo. Fine.

Smitten by dancer Chick (Nina Mae McKinney), sharecropper Zeke (Daniel Haynes) loses his fortune during a crap game. He later becomes a preacher and Chick wants to reform her wicked ways and comes to Zeke, he still in love with her.

Director King Vidor’s pet project, MGM allowed him to delve into films which were considered unusual at the time because his earlier successes had earned so much prestige — and money. Some of those projects were not financial successes but this, his first sound film and one of the first all-Black cast sound musicals, was a success.
