Howard Hawks directed this Raymond Chandler adaptation, with screenplay by William Faulkner, Leigh Brackett and Jules Furthman. With stars Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall (in this scene) and a cast of well-known noir genre supporting actors, and you had quite a concoction. Some of the film’s final state of confusion was due to re-cutting. To this day, fans and critics discuss the film’s peculiar eccentricities.
