MALTESE FALCON, THE (1931) Photo from pre-Code first version

Sold

[Los Angeles: Warner Brothers, 1931]. Vintage original 8 x 10″ (20 x 25 cm.) black-and-white glossy silver gelatin photo. Fine.

So popular was Dashiell Hammett’s brilliantly written crime melodrama that Warner Brothers made an authentic-to-the-book adaptation as fast as they could get it to the screen. Screenwriter Made Fulton gave a female perspective on the material.

Money was usually not present in photos (particularly after the Code) and there was a rule that “movie” money was not to look like real money, but in this film, and present in this still, is what looks like authentic currency, not allowed after this pre-Code period. Photo is coded MF-52. Present are Ricardo Cortez and Bebe Daniels.
