THE LEARNING TREE was the first film directed by an African American and financed by a major Hollywood studio, Warner Brothers. Writer-director Gordon Parks adapted his autobiographical novel about a black teenager growing up in Kansas in the 1920s.

The film was one of the first twenty-five movies selected in 1989 for preservation as part of the United States National Film Registry.
