Olympian Tommie Smith famously gave a clenched fist Black power salute on the victory stand at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City, Mexico. While a student at San Jose State University, he set a world record of 19.5 seconds in the 200 meter straight, which he ran on a cinder track. (Wikipedia)

This photo was taken in 1968 as he was training for the Olympics and was printed in 1972, at which time he was named track coach at Oberlin College.
