Film and television actor James Edwards was best known for his early role in the 1949 film Home of the Brave. Having earned a masters degree in drama at Northwestern, he was able to explore stage and film roles coming out of the service after World War II. This led him to be often cast in roles as a soldier. One of the few prominent Black actors of the time, his career was harmed by his refusal to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee.
