Set of 3 vintage original black-and-white photos, overall near fine.
- 8 1/8 x 6″ (21 x 15 cm) photo, trimmed with line drawn at top for publication, light creasing. Stamp on back of Underwood & Underwood, a major New York photo agency of the early 20th century. Holograph notation on verso indicates “Gorky, wife, and son”. Most likely an image of Gorky with Zinovy Peshkov (his adopted son and mentee who served as his private secretary) and Maria Fyodorovna Andreyevna. Gorky was actually a pen name for Alexei Peshkov; in fact, Maria was Gorky’s common law wife, as the Russian Orthodox Church of the time made it almost impossible for him to get a divorce from his first wife. Most likely taken at the time of Gorky’s tour of the U.S. in 1906, which ended in scandal when it was learned that he was not legally married to Maria.
- 4 5/8 x 6 5/8″ (12 x 17 cm) double weight photo with date stamp of Mar 28, 1928, and holograph note “Maxim Gorky, daughter-in-law and grandchild” on verso.
- 8 x 10″ (20 x 25 cm) press photo with Associated Press stamp and mimeographed text on verso (part of text has torn off but is present). Gorky with theatre director Glasunov, who is going to direct his new play in Moscow.
