In October 1970, Rudolf Nureyev and Natalia Makarova, both prominent ballet dancers who had defected from the Soviet Union, performed together in Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake at the London Coliseum. This performance, which included a recording of the iconic “Black Swan pas de deux”, was part of a BBC broadcast. Natalia would next go to America where she was contracted by American Ballet Theatre.
