Filmed during the annual 24-hour endurance race at Le Mans, France, in 1970, this fast-paced drama follows Michael Delaney (Steve McQueen), a Porsche driver haunted by the memory of an accident at the previous year’s race in which a competing driver was killed.
With a brilliant star, an exciting setting and real-life adventure, the film seemed to have everything going for it — except for a strong script. A troubled production, McQueen envisioned it as a star vehicle but was so discouraged that he did not attend the film’s premiere.
