Arthur Miller (1915-2005) was an iconic 20th-century American playwright renowned for his realistic dramas that critiqued the American Dream and explored the moral struggles of ordinary people. He is universally famous for authoring stage classics like Death of a Salesman, The Crucible and All My Sons.
Beyond his plays, Miller was a prominent public figure. He famously married screen icon Marilyn Monroe in 1956 and later wrote the screenplay for her final completed film, The Misfits (1961). Also, in 1956, he bravely refused to name alleged communist sympathizers to the House Un-American Activities Committee, risking a prison sentence for contempt. After divorcing Monroe in 1961, Miller married Austrian-born Magnum photographer Inge Morath in 1962. They collaborated on several photo-journalistic books and remained married until her death in 2002.
In his later life, Miller remained prolific, transitioning into a revered public intellectual and activist. He published his celebrated autobiography Timebends in 1987, saw a major career resurgence with 1990s plays like Broken Glass, and actively worked on screenplays and essays until his death in 2005.
