A portrait of Linda Brown (now a married woman named Mrs. Charles P. Smith) as she stands in front of Sumner School in Topeka, Kansas. The refusal of that school in 1951 to admit the then-nine year old Linda, due to her race, led to the eventual 1954 Brown vs. Board of Education Supreme Court decision banning school segregation.
