Vintage original script. Quarto, [1], 127 leaves. Mimeograph, boltbound in silver-stamped flexible leatherette binder. Light discolorations in extreme margins of first and last leaves and at edges, large chip from lower spine corner of lower wrapper, overall NEAR FINE in VERY GOOD wrappers.

Signed by director Robert Ellis Miller on title page. This is often considered a first-rate adaptation of McCullers’ book. This is an early draft of this 1968 film, which starred Alan Arkin, Sondra Locke, and featured an early and haunting performance by Cicely Tyson.

Portrait of James Edwards as “Honey Brown” in this Carson McCullers adaptation, “a troubled young man happiest when away from the white world’s dictates and simply playing his horn. Edwards understands jazz musicians and how their art saves their lives. He understands restraints and repressions.” (Bogle, Blacks in American Films, p. 150).

Edwards, despite his manifest gifts, had only a marginal film career because Hollywood was not yet ready for him.

  • Twenty (20) 8 x 10″ (20 x 25 cm.) black-and-white photos, fine.
